Community Associations

A community is not only defined by its physical, environmental, and social characteristics, but also by the local institutions that effect change within the community. Educational, spiritual, political, and economic institutions all operate within communities. They bring in new people, unify residents, and work to improve the quality of life for their constituents.

The Role of Community Associations

Hundreds of self-recognized neighborhoods, each with its own neighborhood association, give the Baltimore region a strong sense of community identity. It is these community associations that work to govern, fight for, and improve the region’s neighborhoods.

Community Associations in the Gwynns Falls

The facing map shows the self-identified boundaries of many associations within the Gwynns Falls Watershed. These institutions are especially important since they often end up speaking for the community as a whole. Even within community associations, though, there may be differences of opinion. Organizers need to be sensitive to such issues when working with community groups.

The following are community associations within the Gwynns Falls Watershed that are listed with the Baltimore County and Baltimore City Planning Departments.*
